George Nelson Hand / Movement Replacement Guide

View Replacement Guide

The metal shaft fits into the quartz movement, and is part of new movements. If you are missing this part 99% of the time it is simply stuck in the minute hand and is held in place by a closed or open nut. Minute hands are always a flat sheet of metal only. Unscrew the nut, dislodge the metal shaft, and reinstall it into the movement. Certain George Nelson models (wall clocks made of solid wood) use a longer minute hand shaft that we can not source, but you can transfer it to a new movement. We only have the standard length metal shaft.

Pre-Sale Questions

Is it difficult to replace the movement or hands?

If you’re mildly mechanically inclined, you can replace the movement and hands yourself. Otherwise, any reputable local clock repair shop or handyman can do it quickly, without the cost and risk of shipping your clock. See our Hand and Movement Replacement Guide.

Do your movements and hands come from Vitra?

Our movements come directly from the German manufacturer that supplies Vitra, so they are identical to the originals. Replacement hands come directly from Vitra, and we try to keep them in stock. We can’t get hands for clocks Vitra no longer produces. If buying from Vitra itself matters to you, you can order from them directly.

How long do the movements last?

With proper care, a quartz clock movement can last 10 to 25 years.

Why don’t you include other parts with the movement?

Most clocks that have stopped only need a new movement. Whether you also need a closed (end) nut, and in which color, or an open nut depends on your clock, so we’d rather send exactly what you need than guess. Our replacement guide shows which parts your clock uses. If you need them, just tick the parts box when you order.

Will replacing the movement lower my clock’s value?

No. It’s the same movement your clock came with. You’re welcome to keep the original, but repairing a quartz movement isn’t practical or cost-effective.

Do you test the replacement movements?

Yes. We run each movement briefly before it ships to make sure it works. If it doesn’t run once installed, we’ll replace it.

The minute hand fell off my clock. What do I need?

If your clock has no second hand, you need a closed (end) nut, which we sell separately. If it had a second hand that’s now missing, you need an open nut and a second hand. Hour and minute hands are sold as a set only and include a closed or open nut.

My hands are bent. Can I order new ones?

Minute and second hands, and some hour hands, are made to bend. Try gently straightening them first. We recommend replacing hands only if they’re badly damaged (for example, from a fall) or missing, as our supply is very limited.
