George Nelson Hand / Quartz Movement Replacement Guide

View Replacement Guide

German made high torque quartz movement for all Vitra produced George Nelson clocks. The wooden Fan, Wheel and Polygon clocks are the only exceptions. They use a longer shaft that you will need to transfer to the new movement.

If your movement has been replaced before and doesn’t match the movement shown, send us a photo of the front of your clock and the back of your movement before you order and we’ll confirm. Do not call. We can’t accept returns on movements, so check now. You can also consult our replacement guide and compare it to your hands and movement.

How to replace movement and hands
Replacing the battery

All wall clocks are powered by a AA 1.5 V battery (included). Inserting the battery: Angle the battery in, pressing the negative flat side of the battery into the spring, and then push down. If your clock is running slow at any point, try a new battery (we recommend Duracell or Energizer).

Extending the life of the movement

The clock movement is easily replaced, but with good care, it can last 10-25 years. To extend the movement's life, change the battery once a year (during fall or spring time change is a good idea). Keep dust from building up on the hands and movement. Do not display the clock in a space that gets intense sunlight and/or heat throughout the day. Adjust the hands using the dial or knob on the back of the clock only. It's best to rotate the dial so the hands move in a clockwise direction, but it's OK for them to rotate counterclockwise (for example, when setting the time back an hour in the fall).

Warranty & Repairs

Please contact us if you have any issue with your replacement movement—whether in or out of warranty. Our movements are covered under a 5-year parts warranty by Clock Forward. If our replacement movement fails within 5 years, we will send a replacement.

Pre-Sale Questions

Is it difficult to replace the movement or hands?

If you’re mildly mechanically inclined, you can replace the movement and hands yourself. Otherwise, any reputable local clock repair shop or handyman can do it quickly, without the cost and risk of shipping your clock. See our Hand and Movement Replacement Guide.

Do your movements and hands come from Vitra?

Our movements come directly from the German manufacturer that supplies Vitra, so they are identical to the originals. Replacement hands come directly from Vitra, and we try to keep them in stock. We can’t get hands for clocks Vitra no longer produces. If buying from Vitra itself matters to you, you can order from them directly.

How long do the movements last?

With proper care, a quartz clock movement can last 10 to 25 years.

Why don’t you include other parts with the movement?

Most clocks that have stopped only need a new movement. Whether you also need a closed (end) nut, and in which color, or an open nut depends on your clock, so we’d rather send exactly what you need than guess. Our replacement guide shows which parts your clock uses. If you need them, just tick the parts box when you order.

Will replacing the movement lower my clock’s value?

No. It’s the same movement your clock came with. You’re welcome to keep the original, but repairing a quartz movement isn’t practical or cost-effective.

Do you test the replacement movements?

Yes. We run each movement briefly before it ships to make sure it works. If it doesn’t run once installed, we’ll replace it.

The minute hand fell off my clock. What do I need?

If your clock has no second hand, you need a closed (end) nut, which we sell separately. If it had a second hand that’s now missing, you need an open nut and a second hand. Hour and minute hands are sold as a set only and include a closed or open nut.

My hands are bent. Can I order new ones?

Minute and second hands, and some hour hands, are made to bend. Try gently straightening them first. We recommend replacing hands only if they’re badly damaged (for example, from a fall) or missing, as our supply is very limited.
