About This Work
Designed by Gino Valle in the late 1960’s for Solari, Cifra 3 has been recognized worldwide as an icon of 20th-century design for more than fifty years. It is part of the permanent collection of the Science Museum (London) and the Museum of Modern Art (New York). The Solari Lineadesign brand has re-launched the historic products that made Solari Udine famous, including the Cifra 3, which they reintroduced in 2015.
With the patented flipping rollers, digits transition cleanly and precisely, minute after minute. Having no hands to interpret, the Cifra 3 is an easy-to-read table clock that features white digits on a black background. The hour and minute each have their own typeface—both were hand-chosen by Massimo Vignelli at the end of the 1960s.
Little has changed since 1966: electrical current is converted into units of time and power the motor, generating simple, perfect rotary movement. Just as it was more than a half-century ago, the mechanical perfection of today’s Cifra 3 continues to depend on skilled craftsmanship, with individual flaps constructed by hand in a specific sequence.
Cifra 3 is still the smallest direct-reading clock that utilizes a roller with horizontal leaves. Encased in an iconic, sleek plastic body, it is available in four colors: Black, White, Red, and Green.
DESIGNER
Architect, designer, and painter of world renown, Gino Valle (1923-2003) made his mark in the design of the flip roller, which was patented in 1966 by Remigio Solari. At the end of the sixties, this took on the unmistakable form of the Cifra 3 clock. Gino Valle began working with the Solari company in 1954, designing the Cifra 5 electromechanical digit-snap clock (patented 1957). All the numerals were produced using four vertical pallets with ten numbers each. The Cifra 5 was the award-winning forebearer of industrial-style clocks. A later model, the Cifra 3 featured a roll of 48 pallets and was made possible thanks to the contribution of Belgian inventor John Meyer. To this day, the iconic Cifra 3 is the smallest direct-reading clock—a perfect choice for the home or office.CORPORATE GIFT
