A million Times

Humans since 1982 launched A million Times in 2013 as the larger sibling of ClockClock 24: more clocks, more hands, and choreographies that fill a wall rather than a shelf. Each version is named for the number of two-handed analog clocks mounted on its panel, from 48 to 288.

How It Works

A million Times artworks are programmed with up to 30,000 messages that guide the hands through arcs and lines reminiscent of jet-stream maps, waves, and abstracted foliage. On the minute, selected hands arrange themselves into digital-style numerals and show the time. Owners choose between two modes: twenty choreographies on a loop, or the studio’s original choreography from 2013 on its own; a third setting shows the time only. The software and hardware are the studio’s own, refined continuously since the series began, and every work is built in Stockholm. For Humans since 1982, the tension between utility and play is the point: the clocks are set free to live another life between their dutiful displays of the hour.

Large-Scale Commissions

The largest edition is the AmT 288: 288 clocks and 576 motors on a panel of black or white stone-like mineral composite, 73.8 by 136 inches. Beyond the editions, the studio takes commissions. Its 2018 work for Singapore’s Changi Airport comprises 504 clocks, which the studio describes as one of the largest kinetic artworks in the world. For Moncler’s Milan flagship, Humans since 1982 built its tallest installation to date: a bespoke 23-foot metal frame holding an AmT 61c and an AmT 200V, a configuration made for that commission alone.

Works from the series have been exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; the Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco; Design Miami/Basel; PAD London; Salon Art + Design, New York; NOMAD, St. Moritz; the Triennale Design Museum, Milan; the Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein; and Mudam Luxembourg. They are held in public collections including Platform-L Contemporary Art Center, Seoul; Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta; and the City of San José Public Art Program.
