Dilù

Luigi di Gioia, known as Dilù, has designed and built clocks in Benevento, Italy. His designs feature minimalist geometric shapes made of lines rendered in iron. By centering negative visual space in their design, Dilù’s clocks employ walls to be their background color and texture. Each person’s individual interior becomes part of the design, cultivating a harmonious blend of timekeeping, sculpture, and backdrop.

Craftsmanship

The Dilù collection represents Italian artisanal tradition, meticulously designed and built by Luigi in his Benevento workshop. Each built-to-order clock receives his personal attention from concept to completion. Using iron sourced from a local supplier, Luigino transforms raw materials into functional art through techniques perfected over years of metalworking in construction and ornamental welding. The powder coating is entrusted to a specialized company in Caserta, while the precision battery-operated movements are sourced from Germany.

ABOUT Dilù

Luigi di Gioia, with the exception of the first five years of his life, grew up in his birth city of Benevento, Italy, where he still lives and works. His interest in art and design was sparked during his military service in Rome and Florence. Luigi’s work with iron began at a crane factory when he was twenty, and it was at this time that he began making iron designs, adding: “I would come back home after work at the factory and put my skills into practice, making my first objects.” Luigi’s experimentations evolved into a series of minimalist wall-hung clocks characterized by their geometric shapes. “I decided that I did not want to make cranes or gates with iron, but instead to render thoughts and concepts into objects that beautify houses and walls.” The company name Dilù, is simply an abbrevation of his name. Continuing to innovate his design aesthetic, Luigi sometimes adds abstracted human figures to clocks upon request, and is exploring some new designs inspired by Benevento, Italy’s reputation as “the city of witches.” Dilù works can be found in galleries across Italy. Dilù is represented exclusively by Clock Forward in the United States.
