  • About This Work
Solstice's form gradually changes over a 12 hour interval.

Solstice is a kinetic art timepiece that reflects the passage of time by an expansion and contraction of a wooden lattice framework over a twelve hour interval. It ‘breathes’ in and out, gradually opening and closing like a flower. At midday and midnight, the clock-face is at its largest. At 6pm and 6am (symbolizing the end of day and night), the clock-face is at its smallest.

    THE MOVEMENT
The expansion and contraction of the clock body is controlled by an electric stepper motor. The clock has a single hand to signal the current time of day (if it's important for you to know the time to the exact minute, this is not the clock for you). Solstice has two modes of operation: clock and demo modes. In the clock mode, Solstice functions as a clock and completes one full rotation every 12 hours. In demo mode, Solstice completes a full rotation in 60 seconds. Demo mode is ideal for showing a guest the clock's full range of motion. Demo mode is activated and de-activated by simply touching the bottom metal bar. All Solstice clocks ordered from Clock Forward ship programmed to complete one full rotation on the hour as a 'visual hourly chime'. It's possible to order without this feature, even though we prefer it.

    THE BODY
A sleek aluminum case conceals the stepper motor and control board. Designed exclusively for wall mounting, the minimalist structure mounts seamlessly to any wall material. The textile cable can be displayed or concealed (with the help of an electrician). Extending from the central body are four sturdy rails that guide four precision-engineered wheels that allow the wooden latticework to expand and contract with time. The dynamic motion is driven by the hour hand marker, which is directly connected to the stepper motor, creating Solstice’s signature breathing effect. The wooden components can be customized in a variety of wood types and colors, with options for solid tones or an artful intermixing of two materials, making each Solstice a unique and captivating kinetic sculpture.

    • Setting the time

There are two procedures for setting the time depending on the control board installed in your Solstice. Unless otherwise requested, all Solstice clocks from Clock Forward use Version 2. If you install your clock with a hidden cable, make sure you still have access to unplug it. When you plug in the clock it will enter Time Setting Mode. In this mode, the clock hand will turn every 60 seconds until you set the time. The time is set by tapping the lower metal bar. Refer to the diagram below to understand how the shape of the clock face refers to the time. The option you use to set the time on your clock depends on your model.

how to tell time on solstice

      Version 1 - Factory standard

      • 1. First Tap: slows down the hand
      • 2. Second Tap: sets the time

Tips: Setting the time on the hour or at a 30 minute increment is simpler to visually align. If your clock is not in time setting mode, disconnect the power and reconnect.

Version 2 - Clocks with hourly choreography

      • 1. Set the hour: each tap will advance the hand 1 hour. Pause when you reach the correct hour, and the clock will confirm with a slight movement. Continue immediately to the next step to add minutes.
      • 2. Set the minutes x5: each tap will advance the hand 5 minutes. Pause when you reach the correct 5 minute interval, and the clock will confirm it with a slight movement. Continue immediately to the next step if you need to add on additional minutes.
      • 3. Set the minutes x1: each tap will advance the hand 1 minute. Pause when you reach the correct minute interval; clock will enter Time Mode. If you made an error, unplug the clock and start over.
    • How to read the time

If you need a clock that displays the precise time, the Solstice is not for you. It is simple to tell the hour and half hour using the markers. For anything in between, it's roughly 15 minutes. It may take some time for you to adjust to reading the time. You can also quickly locate hours based on the 12, 3, 6, or 9 markers as an initial point of reference.

    • How to switch between demo and clock modes

When the clock is in clock mode tap the bottom metal bar to put the clock into demo mode. Tap the bottom metal bar again to put the clock back into Clock mode. The clock will continue to count time in demo mode so the time does not need to be reset. Demo mode is best used as a temporary mode to show the clock movement to a visitor. We recommend leaving it in clock mode otherwise.

    • How Solstice mounts to wall

Use mounting template and consult instructions. The EARTH 45 comes with an 84” cord. If you need a longer cord, 137” lengths are available.

If you lost your mounting template copy, be sure to print it to scale. You may need to find someone with an oversize printer such as Kinkos, Staples, or a UPS Store.

    • Where not to display
      • Do not use the clock in rooms where humidity is high (e.g. bathrooms). This can damage the clock circuitry or warp the wood.
      • Do not place the clock where it could incur unintentional knocks or pulling of the cables.
      • Avoid direct heat radiation, for example heat from radiators or a stovetop (where grease accumulation could also occur)
      • Avoid installing in direct sunlight. An intense change in heat can cause the wood to warp.
      • Do not install outdoors.
    • Care Instructions

Wood can warp over time. The best way to prevent this is to keep Solstice in a dry, indoor environment away from direct sunlight. It is unsuitable for outdoor use. Avoid placing in locations more prone to dust or grease (such as a kitchen) buildup.

      • Do not use lubricant or oil the rails, the slide bearings are self-lubricating.
      • To keep the Solstice clock running smoothly wipe down the stainless steel rails with a lint-free cloth once a month, instructions below.
    • Cleaning Instructions

The purpose is to remove any grease/grime which can add friction to the mechanism. The clock does not need to be disassembled or stopped to clean.

      • Use a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth.
      • Set the clock in demo mode by touching the bottom rail. This will allow you to access the complete rail as the clock expands and contracts over the 60 second interval.
      • When the clock is in the innermost position you can clean the outermost section of the rail and while the clock is in the outermost position you can clean the inner sections of the rails. Be careful and patient when cleaning; it may take several revolutions.
      • It is important to clean the entire length of the rail. The inside surfaces of the rails are most important because these touch the sliding plastic bearings. Use the lint-free cloth and pull through the gap between the rails then sweep along the inside face of the rail applying pressure to remove any grime. The rails should feel smooth to touch.
      • When finsished cleaning, tap the lower metal bar to return to clock mode.

    • Samples & return policy

Please contact us with any pre-sale questions or sample finish request. As a general store policy, we do not take returns. The simple reason is many of our larger clocks are very difficult to repack and return without damaging and we do not cater to clients who are not serious buyers. This ensures our clients are not receiving returned items as 'new'. Many Solstice orders are also customized. Your purchase is insured against shipping damage and protected by a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. With over six years of experience and custom samples, together we can make sure you receive the clock that is best suited for your interior.

    • Warranty & repairs

The manufacturer’s warranty is valid for two years from delivery. Only use Solstice with original accessories. Failure to observe the information in the instructions for use outlined in the manual or modifying, opening or altering your Solstice is not covered by Animaro's warranty.

Never attempt to repair or dismantle your Solstice. Contact us for repairs and replacement parts.

  • Pre-Sale Questions
    • Can Solstice be wall mounted with a hidden cable?

Solstice currently is for wall mounting only. The power cable can be installed so that it exits from either the back or bottom of the clock body. Althought it's something that can be changed once the clock arrives, we will ask your preference before shipping. Witht the help of an electrician, it's possible to conceal the cable, however it is important that you are still able to disconnec the clock from the power supply in order to reset the time.

    • Can you send samples?

Yes, this is part of our business. It is best to see the Solstice finishes in person before selecting—especially if you are considering the popular two color custom color option. All we require is for you to return our samples. A return label is provided.

    • Where is Solstice produced?

Solstice was designed in London and is currently produced in China. Customized options are assembled in UK.

    • Is Solstice battery operated or electricity?

Solstice requires an electrical outlet. There is no battery option.

    • Are you an authorized Solstice retailer?

Yes. All editions are brand new unless otherwise specified. We provide exceptional support not only before your purchase but throughout the lifetime of your Solstice clock—even if you purchased elsewhere.

    • Is the time difficult to set?

No. Time is set by tapping the lower metal bar. Depending on your model, there are two different sequences. Details are provided in the Quick Help & Manual section.

    • How do I read the time?

Each of the metal fasteners are also hour and half hour markers. There is only 1 hand, and one full rotation is a 12 hour interval. It may take some practice to quickly read the time. If you need a precise clock that displays the exact minute or five minute time, Solstice is not the best clock for you.

    • What countries can you ship Solstice to?

We can ship Solstice to locations in North and South America and the Caribbean. If it is a corporate or custom order, we may be able to ship outside of this region. Please contact us. If you are in another country and need assistance, we recommend going to Animaro's website for support. You are always welcome to contact us, and we will connect you with Animaro.

    • Will Solstice ship so that is usable with my country's power and plug specifications?

Yes, Solstice ships with a universal adaptor with interchangeable plugs.

    • My purchase is a gift and it will not arrive in time. What can we do?

We have solutions depending on the situation, please contact us. We also think it's usually best for the recipient to choose their edition.

    • How high should I hang the work? Is it easy to install?

Unless it's a tall work, we recommend hanging art with a vertical center point of around 55" from the floor. Some galleries prefer 58". However, we are aware people tend to hang art higher in their homes. If everything is hung on the higher side in you home, stick with your home's rules. Solstice is easy for one person with hanging experience to install. Most states require you to hire a licensed electrician for any electrical work. An electrician can also mount the metal bracket and install.
